High school athlete pursues passion

Howell High School junior Jake Wendel is a dedicated and passionate athlete who has devoted almost all of his time to the sport he loves.

When reflecting back on his high school basketball career as a whole, the humble athlete doesn’t focus on himself but instead focuses on the fans. “It’s been great, the atmosphere is good. Our fan base has increased and it’s been really cool playing in front of all those people.”

Wendel’s hard work has clearly paid off. When asked about the biggest difference since his younger days, he says, “I’ve certainly gotten better; it’s become less of a game and more of a lifestyle. I dedicate 90% of my time to basketball and the other 10% to school.”

Wendel gives credit for his success to not just his family, but his teammates as well. “Tyler Johnson has been like an older brother. He’s gotten me playing hard, playing like I should.” Wendel gives credit to his family as a big reason for his success, saying, “My dad has sponsored it and paid for all my trips. My brothers have come to all the games which is pretty cool.”

Wendel is also ready to take his game to the next level, which would be college basketball. He knows this will be a challenge but his demeanor suggests that he is ready and will do whatever it takes to get to the next level.

His greatest memory of high school basketball once again focuses on the fans and the great honor to go as far as he did last basketball season. “The best part was playing in district finals, the atmosphere and being there was great,” Wendel.

Wendel says that his entire basketball career has not all been success. When asked about what he regrets most about his game he says, “When I was younger I was playing not as good as I should’ve been.”

However, reflecting back on basketball as a whole, Wendel has mostly good memories. He is proud of the fans and is destined to succeed. Adding one last quote about his game, Wendel says with no hesitation, “Basketball is my life; it’s taken up all my time.”
