Football players get pumped for Homecoming game

As Howell’s Homecoming game quickly approaches, spirit week is responsible for bringing Howell High School together. However, the stars of the event have their own traditions that encourages the team to bring their all.

“The team has our own ‘pump-up’ song that we listen to before the game that every class changes each year. Right before we go on the field, we say a prayer, the ‘Highlander Creed,’” senior running back Thomas Lassitter says.

Howell’s Highlanders express their confidence for this Friday’s game.  Although they keep in mind that Milford has yet to win a game, it could only mean that the team will be more than driven to win.

“Even though they haven’t won a game yet, we can’t overlook them [Milford]. I hope that we really come together as a team and make a rebound this week with a win. I’m confident we can do it, ” junior running back Joey Gossett says.

Milford isn’t the only thing the team has to worry about. With it being Howell’s Homecoming, it’s expected that the stands will be more than filled with supporters. Some believe this year’s student section has been really committed. The section of students is supposed to provide the players with a strong sideline support system giving them the motivation they need to truly bring it.

“I try not to overthink it,” senior kicker Greg Kearns says about the pressure this Friday’s game brings. “The student section really provides us with a lot of support on the field.”

Lassitter has a similar prep-system, as his goal is to “stay loose” and not get too nervous. For Lassitter, It’s all about keeping a relaxed mind.

“You have to enjoy the moment and soak it all in. It’s a great experience and it’s our [seniors] last homecoming game, so we have to make the most of it,” Lassitter says.
