On Monday, February 23rd the National Honor Society will be hosting Howell High School’s second annual blood drive. Staff and students can stop by the lobby outside of the auditorium anytime during the day to make their donation. NHS members Janice Kwan and Megan Bigliardi are running the blood drive this year and encourage students and staff members to donate. “We have a goal of collecting 51 units of blood.” Kwan says. Students must be at least 16 to donate with a permission slip and 17 without one. Permission slips can be found on the table in the commons during all lunches, where students can sign up for a timeslot to make their donation.

Sticky note surprise greets the students of HHS

Rachel Cichon, Editor-in-Chief February 18, 2015
This morning, as weary Highlanders filed into the school, they were greeted by a positive surprise. On every individual locker, a sticky note had been placed with a positive message on it. Each sticky note seemed to have a unique message, design or handwriting which made the notes a personal and pleasant surprise. Students rushed to their lockers to see what message they had gotten.
The new and improved Winterfest

The new and improved Winterfest

Alexa Skonieski, Social Media Editor February 17, 2015
It has always been a struggle at Howell High School to get students to attend the formal affair of Winterfest. Winterfest is just like our famous Homecoming dance, but instead of being held in the field house, it is held in the commons area. The Winterfest dance is put on by the junior student council members. The money raised from the dance goes towards the upcoming classes’ Prom and other social activities they choose to participate in during their senior year.

Elaina McClellan, Sports Editor February 13, 2015
Howell High School has been known for many years as one of Michigan’s most prestigious fastpitch softball teams. For fourteen years, the team performed under the watchful guidance of varsity coach, Paul Bushong, but now the team is experiencing a change in management. Ron Pezzoni, coach and owner of the T2 softball and baseball facility accepted the job as head varsity coach just this past off-season. After being an assistant coach alongside Bushong last year, Pezzoni is ready to take command and continue the Howell tradition.

Due to an upcoming vacancy for the role as the Howell mascot, I'm reaching out and looking for a high-spirited and fun male or female person looking for a life experience that I found incredible. Requirements are very simple, you must be able to fit the entire suit. Also, you must have a flexible schedule to attend as many home games as possible for multiple sports that include football, basketball, and hockey.

Mr. (and Ms.) Highlander

Jordyn McConnaughey, Social Media Editor February 12, 2015
Over the past years Howell High has had a contest which allows 9th-12th grade boys to compete for the title of “Mr. Highlander.” The boys dress up during the Winter Fest spirit week and try to be as spirited as possible while collecting money to donate to the St. Baldrick’s foundation for childhood cancer. The winner not only receives the prestigious title, but a cash prize of $200. However, I see one problem with this contest, it has been only offered to boys.

Howell faces off Grand Blanc

Evan Webster, Staff Writer February 10, 2015
Every school has its rivalries that have been around for generations. Howell’s rival for some time has generally been considered the Brighton Bulldogs. However, Howell has recently developed a rivalry with a neighboring school, Grand Blanc, in only a few short years. Both schools are extremely competitive in all sports, including basketball. On Friday, Feb. 13, Howell and Grand Blanc will go head to head for Howell’s Winterfest basketball game; both teams are tied for first in the division along with Hartland and Pinckney.

Jackie Keranen, Staff Writer February 10, 2015
On Jan. 24, many people gathered together at Leith Lake in Brighton, ready to take a cold, icy polar plunge. The reason they were taking the plunge was to raise money for the Special Olympics Incorporation. This non-profit organization gives adults and kids with special needs an opportunity to participate in year round sports training and athletic competitions in a variety of different olympic sports.

Howell students shave for St. Baldricks

Lindsey Saba, News Editor February 9, 2015
Baldness is generally considered a bad thing; people purchase toupees and wigs, buy into “miracle” hair growth formulas, and affect comb-overs, all in order to hide their barren craniums. However, on Friday, Feb. 13, 2015, four Howell High School students and three Howell Schools board members will voluntarily lose their locks in the name of childhood cancer research.
