Walking around the halls of Howell High, one would be hard pressed to find a person who has not seen the movie that has swept the nation this past month, American Sniper. The true story stars Bradley Cooper as Chris Kyle, a US Navy SEAL sniper who is the deadliest sniper in American military history, with 160 confirmed kills.

The National Honor Society will have a fundraiser on Feb. 20th at Buffalo Wild Wings. The fundraiser will last all day long. NHS will get 20% of the bill of those who bring in a flyer.

Sunday Jan. 25 Paulina Vega was crowned Miss Universe in the 63rd annual pageant. As winner, Miss Columbia will receive an undisclosed salary, a luxury apartment in New York, a wardrobe, a plethora of beauty products, and a one year scholarship from the New York Film Academy. This 22 year old business administration student has been self declared to represent the women of today, but due to to the problematic nature of beauty pageants, I completely disagree.

Howell Pom takes 3rd at High Kick championship

The Howell High School Pompon squad took 3rd at the Mid-American Pompon High Kick Championship on Nov 9th at the SVSU Ryder Center. Howell's team finished 3rd with 289 points, right behind Garden City who finished 2nd with 291.5 points. Plymouth took home the gold in this competition with the winning count of 294.5 points. This comes after Howell's 1st place finish last year at the High Kick championship in medium varsity.

The Kensington Valley Ice House in Brighton will be host to Howell's first Senior Skate. This is open to all Seniors as a great chance to have a good time skating around with friends. Tickets to this wintery event costs $5 to get in. The tickets will be available during the lunch periods on the Thursday the 5th and Friday the 6th.

Slip on your dancing shoes, everybody, because Winterfest is just around the corner! The theme for this year is Mardi Gras. Right after the boys’ basketball game on Friday the 13th, the dance will take place in the commons. It goes from 8:00-11:30 that evening.

Valentine's Day is fast approaching and if you're looking for a cheap gift for a special someone, look no further: Classicality and Calamity are once again selling their singing valentines. For two dollars, Classicality or Calamity will deliver a carnation to the recipient along with a romantic song, however, no note can be written. The valentines are on sale February 9th, 10th, and 11th.

The club meets every Monday from 2:30-4:30 in Mr. Jason Kane’s room 1-19 at the Freshman Campus. The students pick movies with awards to watch and discuss what they like and dislike

Poems were recited by 17 freshmen at the first annual Poetry Out Loud National Recitation contest. Armed with only a microphone and their chosen poems, students competed for the chance to move on to compete in the state finals in East Lansing for a prize of $200, an all expense paid trip to Washington D.C. to compete in national finals, and a $500 stipend for their school to spend on books.

Many students receive their start at Howell High, few come back to repay the favor and work to inspire the younger generations of Highlanders. Only 6 out of 100 Howell High staff actually attended the school. One of these rare teachers is the new Ms. Krista Kirby who graduated in 2006.
