The month of May is shaping up to be a busy one for National Honor Society members both new and old.

May 13: NHS Induction Ceremony

On Wed. May 13 at 6:00 pm, the National Honor Society will hold its Induction Ceremony in the Howell High School  auditorium. Current NHS members are expected to attend and welcome the inductees.

“The purpose of the Induction Ceremony is twofold: it’s an event to recognize some achievements this year from our current members, and to induct new members,”  NHS advisor Mr. Duane Millar says.

At the ceremony, current NHS leadership members will light ceremonial candles, Assistant Principal Mr. Jason Schrock will give a speech, and  new inductees are to say the official induction pledge to complete the induction process.

May 14: Final NHS meeting of the school year

Thurs. May 14 heralds the final meeting of the National Honor Society for the 2014-15 school year.

All NHS members, including the recently inducted, should make time to attend, either before school at 7:00 am, or after school at 2:30 pm.

According to the monthly NHS bulletin, “[During the meeting] we will hold elections for the following officers: corresponding secretary, recording secretary, and treasurer.” New members are welcome to apply to lead these subcommittees.

“They are elected by a jury of their peers, and there are a few [people] who have expressed interest,” Millar says.

Leadership positions: Elections for NHS President and Vice President were held at the April meeting, and the results are in: Brandi Randall is to become the President, and Kathleen Isenegger the VP.

“I’m excited about the new blood, new ideas,” Millar says.

As for new ideas, Randall certainly has some.

“I want people to get geeked out about helping the community, take away the negative connotation surrounding [needing] tutoring, and just have more fun while making a positive impact that’s meaningful,” Randall says.

May 16: Spring Picnic

“[It’s] a social event that we’re organizing, kind of a new concept. The NHS community gets together and celebrates the year’s accomplishments,” Millar says of the picnic.

The picnic is to be held Sat. May 16, from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm. It is at Thompson Lake, and all members of NHS are welcome to participate.

Those who do attend are encouraged to bring a dish to pass. For seniors, this ought to be desserts or snacks, such as cookies, chips, or a fruit/vegetable tray. As for juniors, they are asked to bring drinks; anything from pop to water to lemonade is welcome.

A three-dollar donation from attendees would be appreciated in order to cover the cost of hot dogs and buns.
