The Fellowship of Christian Athletes, known as FCA, is a growing student-led group at Howell High School that aims to bring together students and athletes who want to connect their faith with their sports and everyday lives. This Christ centered group tries to unite athletes through shared beliefs and positive values. FCA provides a space for open discussion and encouragement among other students every other Wednesday at 7 am before school.
FCA was originally started by class of 2025 Chloe Deland to help athletes come together in their faith. Now led by junior Norah Hull, the group meets in Room T-1, where members talk about how faith influences competition, leadership, and teamwork. The group uses social media to promote meetings to try and encourage more of the student body to join. President Norah Hull mentioned how they are planning on doing future fundraisers to get the community more involved.
“Being in an environment where everyone has the same values brings us closer to each other and God,” senior Piepho said.
With an environment like Piepho described, it makes it very easy to feel comfortable sharing and connecting. Piepho also shared how growing up in a Christian family has taught her many lessons and strengthened her faith, which makes her excited to show up every other Wednesday to FCA meetings to share her beliefs and advice with others.
“Having a place where I can talk openly about my faith and what I’m going through has been one of the most rewarding parts,” Piepho said.
“Sports no longer define me, they’re a way for me to learn and show my faith,” Senior Duthie said.
MacKenzi Duthie shared how faith has changed the way she approaches sports and hopes that more Christian athletes start to join their Wednesday meetings. Through her faith, Duthie has managed her nerves and focused on growth rather than just results. Since joining FCA, she has connected with other Christian athletes and hopes to take on a leadership role in the future.
“It’s really about community and playing for a higher purpose,” Moon said. “It reminds me that I’m not just playing for myself, I’m playing for something bigger,”
Through FCA, Moon has learned to balance athletics and faith by prioritizing prayer and reflection. Moon credits her participation in FCA to her fellow member Gabby Piepho for helping her grow both spiritually and as a leader. Moon explained how having teammates who share similar values makes practices and games feel even more meaningful because they aren’t just completing, they are growing together.
Through shared values, prayer, and encouragement, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes continues to make an impact on student-athletes. This helps them strengthen their faith while building a strong sense of community with like-minded peers.
