Presbyterian Church celebrates Scottish tradition

By News Editor: Kayla McClain

To honor years of the Presbyterian faith, on Sunday, April 27 at First Presbyterian Church, 323 W. Grand River Avenue, Howell, MI, all are invited to the Kirkin’ o’ the Tartan celebration at 10 a.m.

Along with the 175th Anniversary, this family contribution takes part in the Kirkin’, a blessing, which is towards the Scottish Tirk, a church. Tartans are “traditional plaid emblems of Scottish clans represented in unevenly spaced colored lines and rectangles on woven wool cloth,” according to the Presbyterian newsletter.

“The Kirkin’ o’ the Tartans service was created or “revived” during World War II by Reverend Peter Marshall, former Chaplain of the U.S. Senate. In 1954, the Kirkin‘ service was moved to the National Cathedral in Washington D.C. where it is still held to the present day,” the information states.

Several activities are scheduled to take place, such as pipe music, a parade of the Tartans, prayer, a naming of the ‘Flowers of the Forest’ (a list of loved ones who have died) and an inspiring message recalling the Scott’s influence on our Presbyterian faith.

Anyone can attend, and is encouraged to bring friends. If you are interested in presenting a flag during the ceremony, you are able to register by calling the church office.

“I agree that this event may be of interest to the wider audience of our community,” Pastor Howard Soehl says.
