Broncos vs. Seahawks: the game of the year

XLVIII_Metlife_reflectBy Staff Writer: Travis Waker

Super Bowl XLVIII will prove to be one of the most exciting and unpredictable Super Bowls in recent history. The game will feature the Denver Broncos and the Seattle Seahawks at MetLife Stadium in New York on Sunday February 2.

The comparison between the two quarterbacks is the most interesting storyline in this game. Peyton Manning is a 16-year professional. He holds the record for pass yards with 64,964. Manning also holds the record for passing touchdowns with 491, including an NFL record set just this year where he passed for 55 touchdowns alone and 5,477 yards.

On the other hand, Seattle’s quarterback, Russell Wilson, is only a two-year professional. He has never thrown for more than 4,000 yards in either of his two seasons. This season, he threw for 3,357 yards and only 26 touchdowns, less than half of Manning’s total. The one factor that might work in Wilson’s favor is his ability to run the ball, likely due to his baseball background. Wilson had 539 rushing yards this season alone and 1,028 for his career. Manning has only 697 yards rushing over his entire 16-year career, including a -31 yards rushing this season, (negative yardage due to sacks).

Both teams have other weapons as well. For example, Denver has five different receivers with 10 or more touchdowns. No other team in NFL history has had more than three in a single season. Seattle has Marshawn Lynch, one of the top running backs in the NFL. This year alone, he rushed for 1,257 yards. Seattle has the top ranked defense in football this year while the Denver defense has struggled at times. Denver, however, has the better record of 13 wins and three losses, while Seattle stands at 11 wins and five losses. Given all the variables, this Super Bowl has the potential to be one of the most interesting games in history.
