Howell varsity baseball finishes trip to Indiana on a high note

For three hours almost every night during a two-month period, the Howell High School varsity baseball team practices either on the field or in the field house gym, depending on the weather. The ultimate goal, of course, is to win Howell’s first baseball state championship in 104 years.

The team, having returned from their first and only out of state trip this past weekend to the Midwest Classic, continues to move forward. The trip was a four and a half hour drive to Westfield, Indiana. While there, Howell took on Westfield, the state champions of Indiana, and they lost 7-1.

The next game was also a loss against Carroll High School 3-1, despite a great performance from senior ace pitcher Alex Duffy. Howell then played a game against Division IV state champions, Lafayette Central. This was Howell’s first, and as of April 9, only win of the season.

The final of that game was 8-0, led by another great pitching performance, a shut-out, from senior and captain James Edwards. Another key moment in the game was the three-run triple by senior outfielder Nathan Holmes.

Despite losing two out of three in Westfield, the HHS baseball squad finished on a high note with an 8-4 in a scrimmage against Saline on Sunday, April 6, their final day of the trip. Howell did not win as much as they would’ve liked in this tournament, but the entire team would agree that the trip to the Midwest Classic was well worth it.

Despite the countless hours the varsity group has put in, they are far from perfect, maintaining a 1-6-1 record as of April 9. Even with the tough start, Howell is filled with players who have experience and know how to win. Howell’s four captains, seniors James Edwards, Ben Balgaard and Nathan Holmes, and junior Joe Corsten, all have multiple years of experience with varsity baseball and know how to lead. Every player on the team, as well as the coaches, are committed to keeping Howell’s state champion hopes alive.
