Michigan standardized tests may switch from ACT to SAT in 2016

The Michigan Department of Education left the state bewildered January 7 when it announced that Michigan’s main college admissions exam will switch from the ACT to the SAT. Since 2007, students have been given the ACT as an achievement test to measure what they’ve learned in school.

Concussions are a growing problem in today’s society. The average high school lineman takes between 1,000 to 1,500 hits to the head each season, some at forces equivalent to or greater than a 25 mile an hour car crash, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of America.

For members of student council, this workload only increases as they plan events and raise money for their class. Despite this, senior Kaitlin Rolli, president of the Class of 2015, devotes her time to effectively leading her classmates and crafting a positive school experience.

Howell High School senior, Aspen Pyle, is taking a big step in beginning her life alongside HHS alumni Emily Jewell with their up-and-coming hand-painted shoe business “Last Resorts”. Pyle and Jewell are selling canvas shoes which are hand-painted to the customer’s preference. Determined to start a new chapter in her life, Pyle hopes this innovative recreation will bring in a few extra dollars to help her on the way.

The Senior All-Night Party is at risk of not happening, much to the chagrin and disappointment of most HHS seniors, who heard stories of last year's party, which occurred at 2/24 Community Church and featured interesting attractions such as a hypnotist. Seniors can still have the party, but it's going to take the combined efforts of many HHS individuals of all ages and grades.

This Scottish symbol has been Howell High School’s mascot since roughly the late 1940’s, when the 1947 yearbook referred to the Highlander.

Twirling and catching batons is no easy thing, but junior Emily Coan has no trouble doing that and recently showed off her talent at Nov. 29th’s Miss High School Majorette competition. She started twirling after her mom brought home three batons from when she twirled in high school. Out of her three sisters, she was the only one who liked it and has stuck with twirling for six years.

Transgender teen’s death draws attention to LGBTQ community

On December 28th 2014, 17 year old Leelah Alcorn ended her own life due to the struggles she was experiencing as a transgender girl. Alcorn was frequently active on the social media site Tumblr and scheduled her suicide note to post after her passing.
